Supporting Families with Young Children in Rural Highland

The families supported by Family First

Our simple approach is to offer the support of one volunteer parent to another parent who may be experiencing difficulties and has a child under four. The volunteer's ability to offer friendship, practical help and support enables young families to cope with the pressures they may be facing.

Volunteers visit families regularly in their homes; usually once a week.

The visits are flexible: the family and volunteer decides when the visits should take place and how they are spent.

Sometimes a parent may want someone to listen and to talk to about their concerns or problems or even someone with whom to share an adult conversation.

At other times parents may require more practical support, such as help to play with the children or get to the shops.

Volunteers are not babysisters or home carers, they offer the type of help a friend would.
